GE:101 Competencies List

Hardware

1) Students shall be able visually identify the following personal computer components: system unit, video monitor, keyboard, printer, hard disk drive, floppy disk drive.

2) Students shall be able to compare the relative performance of the following types of video monitors: monochrome, CGA, EGA, VGA, SVGA and XGA.

3) Students shall be able to compare the relative print quality of the following types of printers: dot matrix, ink jet and laser.

4) Students shall be able to trace, on a block diagram provided by the teacher, data flow from a disk drive through the mother board into memory.

5) Students shall be able run simple diagnostic programs to identify the configuration of a PC.

Windows

1) Students shall be able to use the Windows Explorer to locate folders and files.

2) Students shall be able to explain the meaning of, and demonstrate, "file associations".

3) Students shall be able to explain, in the Windows context, "opening", "maximizing", "restoring", "minimizing" and "closing" a window.

4) Students shall be able to identify at least three operations commonly available from the "context menu".

Word Processing

1) Students shall be able to open a word processing program.

2) Students shall be able save and retrieve files using the word processing program's menu of commands.

3) Students shall be able to enter and delete text.

4) Students shall be able to explain the "insert" and "typeover" modes of text entry.

5) Students shall be able to explain "word wrap".

6) Students shall be able to use the spell checking feature of a word processing program.

7) Students shall be able to print an edited document using the programs's menu of commands.

8) Students shall be able to demonstrate the boldface, underline and italics print enhancements.

9) Students shall be able to demonstrate line centering, indenting and double spacing.

Spreadsheets

1) Students shall be able to start an electronic spreadsheet program.

2) Students shall be able to save and retrieve files using the spreadsheet program's menu of commands.

3) Students shall be able to enter data into cells.

4) Students shall be able to describe the data types "value (or constant)", "label" and "formula".

5) Students shall be able to describe and address cells and ranges.

6) Students shall be able to compose simple formulas using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to solve technical problems.

7) Students shall be able to use the spreadsheet's "copy" command to copy formulas from cell to cell.

8) Students shall be able to print selected blocks of data using the program's command menus.

9) Students shall be able to use the program's graphing commands to prepare and print a simple two-dimensional graph with labeled axes.

The Internet

1) Students shall be able to explain the elements of a valid URL and enter it into a Web browser.

2) Students shall be able to briefly explain a "network", a "modem", a "network card" and an "ISP".

3) Students shall be able to correctly use HTML tags to format a document for display in a Web browser.

4) Students shall be able to explain the difference between HTML "tags" and "attributes".

5) Students shall be able to compose a simple Web document containing plain text, embedded images and active hyperlinks.

General

The following is a representative sample of the 33 performance standards proposed by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The standards are grouped around four goals, which will also be among the goals of this class:

Goal 1: Students will acquire the knowledge and skills to gather, analyze and apply information and ideas. Students will demonstrate the ability to:

     »Develop questions and ideas to initiate and refine research.
     »Conduct research to answer questions and evaluate information and ideas.
     »Comprehend and evaluate written, visual and oral presentations and works.
     »Use technological tools and other resources to locate, select and organize information.
     »Identify, analyze and compare the institutions, traditions and art forms of the past and present societies.
     »Apply information and ideas to different contexts in school, the workplace and everyday life.

Goal 2: Students will acquire the knowledge and skills to communicate effectively within and beyond the classroom. Students will demonstrate the ability to:

     »Plan and make written, oral and visual presentations for various purposes and audiences.
     »Exchange information, questions and ideas while recognizing the perspectives of others.
     »Perform or produce works in the fine and practical arts.
     »Apply communication techniques to the job search and the workplace.

Goal 3: Students will acquire the knowledge and skills to recognize and solve problems. Students will demonstrate the ability to:

     »Recognize problems and define their scope and elements.
     »Develop and apply strategies based on ways others have prevented or solved problems.
     »Examine problems and proposed solutions from multiple perspectives.
     »Evaluate the extent to which a strategy addresses the problem.

Goal 4: Students will acquire the knowledge and skills to make decisions and act as responsible members of society. Students will demonstrate the ability to:

     »Explain reasoning and identify information to support decisions.
     »Analyze the duties and responsibilities of individuals in societies.
     »Recognize and practice honesty and integrity in academic work.
     »Explore and prepare for educational and job opportunities.
