4. Course Description:
A development of the characteristics of voice communication systems. Topics include transmission levels, loss, frequency response, noise and crosstalk, return loss and echo, longitudinal balance, distortion, and standards organizations. [3 lecture hours per week.]

7. Learning Objectives (goals):
Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
7.1 Define electrical safety as applied to telecommunications systems.
7.2 Pronounce the word “telephony” correctly.
7.3 Describe the various differences between the nature of sound, speech and transmission of speech.
7.4 Identify the basic subscriber loop design requirements.
7.5 Discuss the design limitations of loaded and non-loaded cables.
7.6 Describe the difference between manual, step-by-step, and common control switching.
7.7 Sketch a private branch exchange system.
7.8 Sketch the PBX system and its interconnection to the foreign exchange.
7.9 Calculate the power losses in sideband, amplitude modulation, frequency modulation, phase modulation.
7.10 Identify the various types of digital equipment for transmitting and converting digital signals into analog signals.
7.11 Analyze system performance of D3/D4 terminal equipment.
7.12 Decide when to implement fiber optic systems and when to use metallic conductors in data transmission systems.
7.13 Interpret basic schematic and block diagrams as used in the telecommunications industry.
7.14 Analyze performance criteria.
